The University of Notre Dame was founded in 1842 by the Congregation of the Holy Cross, with which it is still affiliated. It includes five colleges (Arts and Letters, Science, Engineering, Business, and the School of Architecture) and a professional school (the Law School), and offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in many disciplines. The largest college, Arts and Letters, is also the oldest, and awarded its first degrees in 1849. The University has over 8,000 undergraduate and over 3,000 graduate students, and a faculty of over 1200. Its library system numbers among the one hundred largest in the country, and includes a significant collection of rare books.

The Department of Music at the University has sixteen full-time faculty members and offers a B. A. in Music, in which about 85 students are currently enrolled; the Master of Sacred Music Program (housed in the Department of Theology) is in its fourth year, and currently has thirteen students. A number of faculty members in Music are affiliated with the MSM program.

The Notre Dame campus lies just north of the city of South Bend, Indiana, and features a number of well-known historical structures and natural attractions. The central campus features the University’s oldest buildings, among them the Administration Building with its famous “Golden Dome” (1879), and the Basilica of the Sacred Heart (1870-88), an example of neo-Gothic church architecture. Behind the Basilica lies the Grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes (1896; a replica of the original in France), the Log Chapel, the “Old College” building (1843), and two lakes, St. Mary’s and St. Joseph’s, each encircled by its own pedestrian footpath. To the east of central campus lies the Hesburgh Library with its reflecting pool; the south face of the library features the ten-story “Word of Life” mosaic, at the top of which stands the figure of Christ. On the south side of campus lie the DeBartolo Performing Arts Center (2004), the Snite Museum of Art, and the 80,000-seat Notre Dame Stadium, home of the famous Fighting Irish football team. The team dates from the late nineteenth century, and is supported by the Band of the Fighting Irish, the oldest marching band in the country.
